First degree is usually taught over 8-12 hours. Students practice Reiki self-care and share Reiki with one another. This class prepares students to give themselves daily Reiki for life. Students learn hand placements to use when sharing Reiki with family or friends, either through a full session or an abbreviated chair session, as well as how to offer Reiki in acute situations and through informal "spot therapy." Reiki classes offered to nurses and other health care professionals often include content on Reiki application in clinical settings. Although the class is primarily experiential, the Reiki master gives an overview of the history and precepts of Reiki. Most importantly, the Reiki master initiates students so they become empowered conduits for Reiki energy. Traditional First degree training includes four initiations. For most people who want to practice on themselves and family, First-degree training is all they need.

After Mrs. Takata passed on in December, 1980, the twenty-two Masters she had initiated continued to teach and eventually began initiating other Masters. At first they taught in the same way Mrs. Takata had done, teaching the complete system in three degrees. Eventually some Masters began making changes to the system, adding knowledge and healing skills they had acquired from experience and inner guidance. Some took the third degree that originally contained the complete Master training and broke it up into two or more parts. Some actually broke the Master degree up into as many as five parts, calling each part a new degree.

^{The joys of becoming a Reiki Master are many and you don't necessarily have to teach in order for the Master training to be useful. The additional healing energy, symbols, techniques and knowledge will add value to your healing abilities. Treating yourself, giving yourself and others healing attunements and treating others in person and at a distance will all be noticeably improved. The fact that you can pass Reiki on to friends and family is also a definite plus. Many take the Master training with just this in mind. However, if you ever decide to formally teach, you will be able to do so. As each person takes the Reiki Master training, and increases their personal vibration, this adds to the vibration of the whole planet!}

The Western-style attunement process is not the only way to convey the Reiki ability to students. The Reiki Evolution Master Teacher course also includes training in the ‘Reiju’ empowerment process that has been passed to us by Usui Sensei’s surviving students. Reiju empowerments represent a wonderful, simple, elegant, powerful and inspiring method that can be used as alternatives to the Western-style attunements at all levels.

It will also be necessary to practice the talks, lectures and meditations you will be leading in class. Make outlines of your talks and practice into a tape recorder. Listen to your tapes and take notes on ways you can improve your talks. Then continue to practice until you are confident. Don't be afraid to use your outline in class. When teaching, relax and let the Reiki energy do the work.

Many Reiki masters have websites or brochures that describe their training, experience and classes. If you do not find such information, it is reasonable to have a brief conversation to ask some questions. Many of these questions are the same ones you would ask a Reiki practitioner, as outlined in the section How Can I Find a Qualified Practitioner.

In addition, be sure to ask about the Reiki master's teaching experience and classes (scheduling, fee, etc). And finally, ask what opportunities the Reiki master offers for continued mentoring and group practice. Choose your Reiki master carefully, looking not only for a teacher who has the qualifications you want, but also for one with whom you feel a rapport.

I have complete respect for Reiki teachers in all traditions who feel strongly that teaching Reiki only in-person is what is right for them, and I also completely support people who wish to learn Reiki in an in-person environment. I want as many people as possible to have the tool of Reiki, however they come to it and however they use it. I feel it’s important to work with a qualified, well-trained Reiki Master who understands how to teach about Reiki; however, Reiki itself is our most important teacher.
The attunement process used by the Center in all Reiki classes is a combination of the Usui system and a special Tibetan technique. It is thought that Reiki originated in Tibet, therefore, the use of the Tibetan technique and symbols creates a stronger connection with the origins of Reiki. The addition of the Tibetan attunement technique to the Usui system of attunements has greatly improved their quality. This unique attunement process was developed over time to be more powerful and to bring in a wider range of attunement energies than the original Usui system. In Reiki III the Usui/Tibetan method of giving attunements is taught along with the original Usui system of attunements.

We include a range of original and non-original symbols on the course, though we don’t want overemphasise the use of symbols, because we believe that they have assumed an unnecessary importance within the world of western Reiki. The symbols that you learn on the Master course allow you to send Reiki to heal at the soul level, produce balance in an instant, deal with aspects of karma, and focus energy intensely on the mind or the emotions. During the Master course you will be ‘attuned’ to these symbols:
Mastership allows you to pass the Reiki ability to others, and you will be using the course manual (with step-by-step instructions, digital images, drawings and summaries), the Audio CDs and the DVD to make the process as straightforward as possible. You will practice the Reiki attunement process in advance of the course and on the day of the course itself you will demonstrate your knowledge in different ways and receive practical guidance and pointers to make sure you are comfortable with the stages involved.

If, after the training, urgent matters or questions arise, I can always be contacted or you can ask your questions on the Live-Reiki Forum. This limited access internet forum gives my students a very safe environment to share experiences and discuss Reiki and general spiritual questions. I also suggest a Reiki buddy for personal sharing and exchange of energy. The Forum can be helpful in that too.

The pre-course material was excellent. I know I will be working through much of it for years to come. I loved the way it was presented with student comments about each section. If ever I am led to teach commercially I know I will be so grateful for that tremendous back up and support. The CDs were great and I went to bed playing them every night in the hope it would filter through my consciousness while I slept. The DVD brought the words to life and were really helpful as I could practice with them.
_{What do we look for in someone when considering them as Reiki Teachers? An enthusiasm for the subject, humility, experience, a desire to help and serve, an open heart? Ironically most people who I have taught to be Reiki Teachers were usually the last to believe they could be. If you feel a pull to do this, that is sufficient for me and together we will develop your skills and practice to another level giving you the knowledge and confidence to take someone through Reiki training yourself.}
I was able to meditate for a half hour before receiving my attunement, and I felt ready to receive the Reiki Melissa sent, but I had no idea it would be so powerful. It was late at night and everyone was sleeping but me, and right away my hands became hotter than they ever have. My entire body began buzzing. I closed my eyes to tune into the energy and attunement, and I could see the different symbols swirling around my head. Each had its own color, and as they entered my crown, I felt another jolt of peace and energy. Once all five were in my crown, my hands started to vibrate. Each symbol came yet again, this time entering each palm. My hands became hotter and hotter, and my entire body started to sing. Of all the attunements I’ve received, this was by far the most powerful and clear. As she cleared my chakras, I felt my body unravel and the stress lift. Everything was at peace.
Learning Reiki from Brooke was one of the best experiences of my life and it changed me in many profound ways. Her Reiki book feels very soothing and peaceful, and knowing Brooke, that is because it is infused with her essence…she truly “walks her talk” and is one of the kindest and most loving people I know.
