Many Reiki masters have websites or brochures that describe their training, experience and classes. If you do not find such information, it is reasonable to have a brief conversation to ask some questions. Many of these questions are the same ones you would ask a Reiki practitioner, as outlined in the section How Can I Find a Qualified Practitioner.

It was nice when you explained that Reiki is a therapy wherein the energy is moved and the energetic systems are affected in order to promote the healing of a person. That seems like a harmless way to improve a person. I might ask my mom to give this a try since she has been suffering from the side effects of her surgery, and she doesn’t want to take meds. The Kotodama, or ‘jumon’, are sacred Shinto mantras used by Usui before the introduction of symbols into Reiki. We show how these mantras can be used when carrying out treatments, we become familiar with their characteristic energies, we discover how they can be used for self-healing and spiritual development, and we learn how they can be used in conjunction with Reiju empowerments. During the course, the student will be chanting the kotodama over an extended period to further their self-healing and spiritual development, to deepen their connection to and experience of these energies, and they will also be using these energies when treating others.
There are schools that teach parts 1 & 2 over 2 days or more but usually they have far more students and hence, larger classes. This limited access internet forum gives my students a very safe environment to share experiences and discuss Reiki and general spiritual questions. I also suggest a Reiki buddy for personal sharing and exchange of energy. The Forum can be helpful in that too.
Find out how long the class is; ask for an outline of what you will be taught and the cost. In a first degree Reiki class you should be taught a sequence of hand positions for treating yourself and other people, and given time to practise these in the class. You may also be taught about treating animals and plants. You will be usually told the history and principles of Reiki and there will be opportunities for you to ask questions.
Reiki 3, or the reiki master level, attunement elevates practitioners to a teaching level, and expands your understanding of reiki to the point of being able to teach and attune others. Receiving this attunement and training represents a deep commitment to the practice and ideology of reiki and is recommended for those who wish to practice reiki healing professionally.
Activation of Reiki within a persons hands is made possible by a simple process called an "attunement". The attunement or empowerment is performed by a Reiki Master during a workshop. It is the attunement which allows the person to tap into and channel the Reiki energy. It cannot be learned from books or just being talked about. Without the attunement you may direct healing energy, but it will not be Reiki energy.
